Strength Testing FAQ's and Disclaimer

Beartooth and Beartooth Alpine Pitons: We sent our pitons off to be stress tested by a third party who's testing pull capacity was up to 18kn. They completed two tests: one, pulling from bottom clip in point to top clip in point (the two largest eye holes in the frame) and two, pulling from the bottom eye hole to near the base of the blade (a typical "textbook" placement in the rock). They were unable to break the pitons when pulling up to 18kn. The only noticeable affects when pulling were: 1) an elongation of the bottom eye hole to more of an oval shape and 2) small indents in the metal where the steel carabiner was pulling. These tests simulated pull stress in vertically oriented placements most common in "beak" style pitons. Our pitons are not certified to a standard by any governing body.

Disclaimer: Climbing and mountaineering of any kind is dangerous. You assume all responsibility for your own actions. The ability to use specialized pieces of climbing equipment, including any equipment that we make, and properly assess their placement security is a skill. Seek professional instruction. All climbing equipment, including ours, should be checked regularly for cracks, fatigue, and any other indication of wear that could result in failure of the equipment. Failure to do so this may result in serious injury or death. Using any piece of climbing equipment outside of its proper placement mechanisms can result in failure and injury and/or death.
